约翰·契佛的小说很多，但是，最为出色的还是他的短篇小说，由于他在小说中着意刻画城市郊区以外的中产阶级聚居区的社会生活和精神们风貌，不无遗憾地记录了这些中产阶级家庭以及人物的生活和心态，因此在美国和世界文坛有“美国郊外契诃夫”的美称。
约翰·契弗（Cheever.J.）（美）（1912——1982），美国现代重要的小说家，生于马萨诸塞州昆西市，读大学预科时因叛逆被学校开除。1930年了表第一篇小说《被开除》，从此一发不可收拾。1957年发表第一篇长篇小说《华普肖一家》，之后发表《华肖丑闻》、《弹丸山庄》。自选集《约翰·弗短篇小说集》于1977出版，获得了1978年全国图书奖和普利策小说奖，1977年，长篇小说《猎鹰者监狱》问世。契弗一生著述丰富，尤以短篇见长，有“美国郊外契诃夫”之誉。
《契佛短篇作品集》集中大多数作品，在《纽约客》刊登过。“代表了契氏写了三十多年短篇小說的总成绩。”出版当年竟然成为畅销书，一印再印。
吴鲁芹先生在《英美十六家》中对他推崇备至，他的作品“凡经刊布者，无不读也”。又在另一篇文章说：“先读《契弗短篇集》，读上一二十篇，你就会发现他的伟大，发现何以人家要恭维他是美国的契可夫，到那时你就会不忍释手，继续读下去，读完全书的六十一篇。”
